In the Spotlight: Champions for Children, 2026 Program of the Year

The University of Miami (UM) Linda Ray Intervention Center’s Little SEALS (Social‑Emotionally Ready and Literacy‑Informed Students) Summer Program provides essential continuity of early intervention services during the summer months. Designed for young children who are at risk of poor developmental outcomes and meet eligibility criteria, the program ensures that developmental progress made during the school year continues without interruption.

Little SEALS integrates evidence‑based, relationship‑centered practices into a nurturing, developmentally rich summer curriculum. The program includes targeted activities that support social‑emotional development, shared book reading to strengthen early language, communication, and emergent literacy skills, and a variety of enrichment experiences that promote exploration, engagement, and joyful learning. Families and caregivers are active partners throughout the summer, participating in meaningful engagement opportunities that strengthen home–school connections and reinforce each child’s progress.

Every child in the program has an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) developed at enrollment and updated regularly. The IFSP serves as a collaborative roadmap for the child’s developmental goals and guides the services provided throughout the program.

Many children and families served in the program face complex challenges and may be connected to the child welfare system due to abuse, neglect, parental substance use, or homelessness. UM Linda Ray Intervention Center and its Little SEALS program offer a stable, responsive, and enriching environment where young children can continue to grow, learn, and thrive.
